ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF THE ANCIENT CITY OF KLITOR
 |
It is situated within the municipality of Lefkasios and falls under the administrative jurisdiction of Ano Klitoria. This is one of the most important cities of ancient Azania. Built like most of the ancient cities in Arcadia on a plain, and not on a naturally fortified hill, the city was surrounded by strong protective walls, now not in good condition, as the stone material from these walls was used during the post-byzantine and early modern times for the construction of surrounding settlements. The ancient wall was built during the Hellenistic times and was, in parts, strengthened with semicircular towers.
Excavations have unearthed a substantial part of the city’s fortification and towers and part of the ancient theatre which is not in good condition.
Every summer, special facilities are put up in front of the ancient theatre, and important theatrical performances are staged.
According to tradition, the city took its name from Klitora, son of Azana.
