The Holy Chapel of Panagia Plataniotissa
 |
The chapel can be found on the way from Kalavrita to Aigio via Pteri, at around 30km from Kalavrita. In a beautiful green location with abundant spring waters flowing around, the small chapel of Panagia Plataniotissa is tucked inside the hollow of a large plane tree, a wonderful natural phenomenon which was created when three plane trees sprung out close to each other and over the course of time they united.
This historical plane tree measures 25m in height, its base circumference is 16m, and around its middle it measures 12.65m. The hollow can fit twenty people. Two pillars and a small icon screen mark the doorway. The icon of the Child-cradling Virgin Mary is depicted on the tree’s bark 3m above the ground. According to tradition, monks from the Mega Spileo monastery, trying to save the icon, moved constantly around the area and sought refuge one night in the village of Klapatsouna (as it was called back then), settling for the night in the tree’s hollow. Next morning as they got up to leave, they saw, to their amazement, that the icon had been imprinted on the tree’s bark where they had deposited the icon the night before. That is how the name Panagia Plataniotissa came to be (Panagia: Virgin Mary and plataniotissa meaning the lady from the plane tree) and hence the village took on this name.
The chapel celebrates on the 8th of September.
