The Monument of the Holocaust of Kalavrita (the Place of Sacrifice)
 |
One of the town’s exceptional monuments, and a place of Holy Worship, is the Place of Sacrifice, where all the town’s male population aged 14 years and up was executed by German troops, on the 13th of December 1943. A huge cross sits on the hill of Kappi, to commemorate this horrific crime. The names of all who perished that day are inscripted on the pillars surrounding the main area. Within the catacomb, there is a number of small candle holders equal to the number of families who suffered the loss of a loved one.
Next to the catacomb, one can view a sculpture depicting a mother in pain, an emblem of the Community, and a symbol of human forbearance, which was created by Anna Vafeia, when still a student of Fine Arts. It also symbolizes the women of Kalavrita (the mother, the sister, the grand-mother and the daughter), whose superhuman efforts, resulted in the rebuilding of the totally destroyed town of Kalavrita.
Each year, on the 13th for December, a service is held at the town’s cathedral, followed by a funeral march to the Place of Sacrifice, where a prayer is said and all the names of those who fell are called out.
