Archaeological Site of Ancient Kleitora
Just 3 kilometers from modern Kleitoria, near the village of Ano Kleitoria, lies the Archaeological Site of Ancient Cleitor.
Cleitor was one of the most important cities of ancient Azania. Unlike many other Arcadian cities built on naturally fortified hills, Cleitor was founded on a plain and was therefore surrounded by strong defensive walls for protection.
Today, the fortifications are not well preserved, as much of their stone material was reused during the post-Byzantine and later periods for the construction of houses in nearby settlements.
The city walls, reinforced at intervals by semicircular towers, were constructed during the Hellenistic period. Recent excavations have revealed significant sections of the fortifications and towers, as well as part of the ancient theatre, which unfortunately has not survived in good condition.
In front of the ancient theatre, a specially designed modern stage now hosts major theatrical performances every summer, since the preservation state of the original theatre does not allow its use.
According to tradition, the city took its name from Cleitor, the son of Azan.
