The Toothed Railway is the work of Harilaos Trikoupis.
About 113 years ago, the cog railway Diakoptos-Kalavryta, starting from the coastal town of Diakoptos and parallel to the tracks of the river, built bridges, dug tunnels, threw "teeth" and managed to climb up to Kalavritas.
The contract for the construction of the line was signed in 1889 and its construction was finished seven years later. The design of the line was done by French technicians. The work was very difficult due to the difficult terrain. On March 10, 1896 the train made its first journey.
From then until today, the Vouraikos river and Odontotos flow together. The train is so well integrated into the natural environment, it looks as if it has always been there. The way it was built did not burden the ecosystem of the canyon. With the wood and stone of the area, the technicians made for the sake of the train works that you think nature made by itself.
The route starts from Diakopto, crosses the Vouraikos gorge, passes the village of Zachlorou and ends in Kalavryta. The journey takes about 1 hour.
Odontotos is not just the "train". The Vouraikos gorge and the Diakopto-Kalavryta cog railway are a unique attraction in Greece.
