The Cave of Lakes is located on the Kalavryta – Kleitoria road at an altitude of 827 meters. It is 17 km from Kalavryta and 9 km from Kleitoria. The road passes just a few meters from the artificial entrance of the cave and right next to the natural one.
The Cave of Lakes impresses visitors even with its name. Lakes inside a cave are not common, neither globally nor in Greece, where it is considered a unique geological phenomenon.
From a hydrological perspective, the cave can be divided into three sections:
-
The first section is dry, approximately 80 meters long, with a flat floor covered by a thick layer of red soil.
-
The second section is about 700 meters long and is characterized by successive lakes.
-
The third and largest section is 50 meters long.
The cave is a rare natural wonder. Besides its labyrinthine corridors, mysterious passageways, and stunning stalactites, it has a unique feature not found in any other cave: successive cascading lakes arranged on three levels, making it one of a kind in the world.
The explored length of the cave is 1,980 meters, while the currently accessible part is 500 meters.
Visitors enter through an artificial tunnel that leads directly to the second level, an area that inspires awe and admiration.
The passage over the lakes is made via elevated artificial bridges.
