Holy Church of
Panagia Plataniótissa

Located 30 km from Kalavryta along the Kalavryta–Aigio road via Pteri, the chapel of Panagia Plataniótissa is set in a lush green area with cold flowing water. It is uniquely built inside the hollow of a massive plane tree, formed from three trees that fused over time into a single natural wonder.

The historic tree is about 25 meters tall, with a base circumference of 16 meters, and can hold around 20 people. Inside, a small altar with two columns forms the Beautiful Gate. The icon of Panagia Vrefokratousa (Virgin Mary with Child) is imprinted on the tree trunk, 3 meters above the ground. According to tradition, the imprint appeared during the period of iconoclasm when monks briefly rested the icon inside the tree’s hollow.

The chapel celebrates its feast day on September 8th and is a must-see for visitors fascinated by history, nature, and Byzantine tradition.
