Gorge
Vouraikos River
The Vouraikos River springs from the mountains of Kalavryta, between the eastern extensions of Mount Erymanthos and the western slopes of Mount Helmos, and flows northward through the western part of the prefecture of Achaea.
Its length is approximately 40 km. After passing Kalavryta, the Vouraikos has carved a deep and steep gorge through which the cog railway runs, connecting Kalavryta with Diakopto.
According to myth, Heracles loved Vouda, the daughter of Nephelegeretis and Helike, and opened the passage to reach the sea below and meet her. From her, the Vouraikos River took its name.
